When you think of saving money, you may think of words like “necessary”, “tedious”, or “boring”. Raise your hand if you think the word “fun”. Anybody at all? Yeah…saving money has been rarely thought of as fun, until now! But there are indeed some fun and strange ways (rarely thought of) to save some precious dough.
Without further ado, here are 7 ways to save money that are fun, unusual, or both. Start by using one or more of these methods today, and watch the bucks start stacking up.
#1 – Exclusive deals sites
Everywhere I seemed to turn, people were talking about “Groupon”, or “Group on, or “Group-on”… I didn’t really know or care too much about it, and frankly was getting annoyed about hearing about it all the time. Until I find out there was a reason I was hearing about it all the time…it rocks. 50% off a dinner for two? Pennies on the dollar for a cool gadget out there somewhere? Yes, please! Just get it if you haven’t already.
#2 – Take a short shower
I have to chalk this one up as “unusual,” because it certainly doesn’t sound fun. But turning down the heat and bearing a lukewarm shower can save some money. Also, not lollygagging in the shower – just lathering up, rinsing, and getting out save a little money.
#3 – Check your corporate discounts
This is a big one, and I was blown away by the discounts I was not taking advantage of at work. Rental cars, cell phones, online classes, hotels, gym memberships, ball games… the diversity of the discounts that I wasn’t using was incredible. Do yourself a favor and check if your company offers some corporate perks.
#4 – Cut the cable
About 75% of you just went into panic mode and maybe even clutched your remote control a little too hard. Let me intervene here…I actually did this, and am still doing it. I have to say that I don’t miss cable at all… the endless commercials, horrible shows, 100+ channels of absolutely nothing on, aimless browsing through the “guide”…sound familiar? Try Netflix, y’all…8 bucks for unlimited shows and no commercials.
#5 – Drink booze at home
If you’re a drinker, do you complain about the $5 beers at your local joint, but still buy them? Yeah…bar nights are expensive. Even a couple cocktails at dinner can set you back more than $10. Do yourself a favor and abstain until you can buy a six-pack for about the same price.
#6 – Happy Hours
Building on #5, I have to say that I’m a big fan of the wonderful Happy Hour. Not just for the sweet drink deals, but also the cheap appetizers and even entrees. Check out your favorite joint’s happy hour times and get yourself there.
#7 – Piggy bank it
Yes, buy an actual piggy bank and put your loose change in there. It’s actually satisfying to place loose change in something designed for a toddler…and it adds up pretty fast.
